About Tanya Hladik

I was born at home in Whatcom County, in a rural home in Sumas. I feel blessed to have come into the world with natural loving beginnings, with a mother who trusted her ability to give birth. And I feel blessed to be born into such a beautiful place in the world with such beautiful community.

I grew up in Whatcom County. After high school I left Whatcom County to attend college, but then moved to Bellingham in 2003 to finish my B.A. at Western Washington University, through Fairhaven College. After holding two fulltime year-long Americorps volunteer positions post college, I adventured down the Pacific Coast, some on a bicycle. In the Spring of 2008, I took a position at Heartwood Institute, a residential healing arts school in Northern California. I spent a year at Heartwood Institute, working in the garden and kitchen and studying massage, cranial sacral therapy, reiki, martial arts, movement, and nutrition. Through living in rural community and taking classes at Heartwood, I learned what it means to follow to the process as it unfolds, even through strong emotions and difficult situations, and to create loving, healing space.

I became fascinated and mesmerized by birth when my niece was born 2 years ago. Ever since I have devoted time to the home study of childbirth. While in California, I completed my training to become a Birth Doula through the Sierra Childbirth Institute in Santa Cruz California.

Summer of 2009, I spent a month at the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center in Taos, NM. As an intern, I spent each day shadowing the midwives during clinic and learning and aiding during birth.

I’m now practicing as a Birth Doula in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in hospitals, birth centers and in the home. I bring an intuitive and nurturing nature into the birth room.
