What is a Doula?

Doula is a Greek word whose definition has come to mean a woman who helps other woman. It is used to describe an experienced female labor companion who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to the mother and partner before, during and after childbirth. She encourages and reassures the natural abilities of the laboring woman. A Doula mothers both the father and the mother as they are born into their new family.

Why have a Doula?

Women who have the support of a Doula in the delivery room have a major reduction in the length of labor, 50% less cesarean sections, and a remarkable drop in the mother's need for pain medication. (The Doula Book: How a Trained Labor Companion Can Help You have a Shorter, Easier, Healthier Birth)
Doula's nurturing helpful and objective assistance relieves the mother’s partner or other present family member from being the sole provider of support.

Doula Services

Prenatal visits:

During you third trimester, we meet two times at your home to talk about your wishes and needs regarding your birth. If desired, I help you write a birth plan. I also provide you with any information you desire regarding labor, hospital procedures and your choices.

When Labor Begins:

I go on call for you two weeks before your due date. I am available at this point 24 hours for questions via phone or email. Once your labor begins, you are free to call me whenever you want me to join you. I will drop what I am doing and join you either at your home, the hospital or birth center.

I stay with you during the whole labor, providing constant support in whatever way you need. I don’t leave you until 2-3 hours after your baby is born. During your labor, I will help you realize your birth plan.

Partner/Family Support:

In addition to helping the laboring mother, I can help her partner and family members know how to support the her. In being a nurturing presence in the birth room, I can relieve the partner of the responsibility of being with her sole support throughout the labor. My constant support allows the partner time to rest and eat and take care of any other responsibilities. I can help also the partner understand what is happening during labor.

During labor I encourage the mother to let her body tell her what is best for her and her baby.

Information and Advocacy:

Birth can be an overwhelming process. I help the mother and her partner relax by helping them understand this process, explaining what is happening in the moment, and help you have the kind of experience you desire. I am your advocate for remaining true to your birth plan, and helping inform the delivery room staff of your wishes. I can explain medical procedures so that you can make the best informed decision possible for you and your baby.

Massage and Physical Support:

Helping the mom try different positions to help progress labor. Providing massage and physical support to help lessen pain and increase relaxation. I can help the mother find her rhythm to cope with contractions.

Emotional Support:

This means listening with an open and compassionate heart to anything the mother needs to talk about at any point during labor. It also means reassuring the mother whenever and however she needs it and allowing for whatever emotions come up during labor.

With the understanding that birth is an incredibly important moment for the family, I help you document this precious time. I can take photos before, during and after the birth. I can take video (you provide the equipment). I will give you a written birth story during my postpartum visit.

I will visit you 1-2 times postpartum to check in on how you and the baby are doing and to talk with you about your birth.
